Encopresis is the involuntary loss of formed, semi0formed, or liquid stool in inappropriate places such as underwear, diapers, or pull-ups in children over the age of 4.  Constipation plays a major role in the development of encopresis.  The child first should be evaluated by his/her primary care physician.  Treatment for encopresis includes:
1) providing education
2) relieving constipation
3) preventing further constipation
4) the importance of diet and exercise.
Parents should understand that the child is not to blame for his/her encopresis.
